Municipal public works and road authorities responsible for a network they cannot afford to survey with a dedicated fleet.
A conventional road condition survey needs a purpose-built vehicle with laser profilometers and imaging rigs. It is accurate, and it is expensive enough that most authorities can only run it across a fraction of the network, every few years. In between, maintenance gets prioritised from complaints, from windscreen surveys, and from whichever councillor called most recently.
This solution closes that gap. Sensors mounted in vehicles already driving the network — refuse trucks, inspection vans, transit buses — produce continuous condition data at a fraction of the cost, so the whole network is covered rather than a sample of it, and covered often enough that you are ranking today’s defects rather than last cycle’s.

Method
The approach turns everyday devices into a low-cost, scalable data source for assessing pavement condition. Smartphone-class accelerometers and GPS, mounted in a vehicle, record the vertical response of the suspension as it travels. Potholes, cracking, settlement and joint faults each leave a different signature in that trace.
We process those traces to separate road defects from the vehicle’s own behaviour — braking, cornering, speed bumps, driver style — then classify the surviving events by type and severity. Because the same stretch is driven repeatedly by different vehicles, readings are cross-checked against each other rather than trusted individually, which is what makes crowd-sourced data usable for prioritisation rather than just indicative.
Classified defects are matched to your road centreline and aggregated to segments, so the output arrives in the units your maintenance planning already works in. Ranking combines defect severity with traffic exposure, so the list reflects consequence and not just condition.
